It has been recently hinted at that corrupt cop and old time friend of the Onibaku, Saejima Toshiyuki, will take the lead as protagonist of Tohru Fujisawa’s latest comic series set for publication this January.
For those who are unfamiliar with the character, or those just need a quick reminder, Saejima has appeared in three out of the four series concerning the Onibaku, appearing in both GTO and GTO Shonan 14 Days as a minor side character, and Shonan Jun’ai Gumi as a more prominent complimentary character. In Shonan Jun’ai Gumi, Saejima first appears as an adversary to Onizuka and Ryuji, along with his half Japanese companion Kamata Jun. After suffering a clear defeat, both characters shortly befriend the Onibaku as fellow Tsujido High students. In GTO, Saejima returns as a police officer, an unlikely profession for the shifty and hot-tempered former high school delinquent.
Fujisawa Toru first made mention of his new series on the 11th of November in an entry on his Twitter page. He noted that he had made a start on some illustrations for it, and that it was a policeman story set to appear in Young Magazine in January. On the 2nd of December, Fujisawa made a post on his blog anticipating the up-and-coming serialisation, ending with “And by the way, the main character this time will be this guy”, followed by the illustration of a face strikingly similar to Saejima’s. Although it is yet to be confirmed in words, it is clear from the image’s resemblance that Fujisawa is hinting at Saejima taking the lead.
