Onizuka, Eikichi
Kanji: 鬼塚英吉
Age: 14 (BC), 16-17 (SJG), 22(GTO).
Birthday: 3 August, 1975
Height: 5’5 (SJG)
Weight: 55kg (SJG)
Known Education: Hacchū Junior Highschool,
Shōnan Kyokutō Senior Highschool,
Shōnan Tsujidō Senoir High School.
Occupation: Student/Various partime jobs (SJG),
Teacher (GTO).
Gang member of: “Onibaku Combi”, “Onibaku Gumi”, “Midnight Angels”, “Santamaren”.
Description: The main character of the series and former member of the Midnight Angels, Eikichi is one half of the famous Onibaku duo, renowned for their bravery and skill in demolishing large gangs. Rather perverted, he won’t pass up the opportunity to cop a feel when given the chance, but can’t seem to find a girlfriend. Despite being a stereotypical street punk in some respects, Eikichi has his own strong moral code, and is usually reliable to help when his friends are in trouble.
In GTO, Eikichi is 22 years old, fresh out of a less than satisfactory university and looking for job. Unfortunately, he doesn't have much luck with this, due to his regent hair style and history of bad education. Just as he’s about to give up all hope, he meets a girl, Erika, who inspires him to a teacher. Making it as a student teacher was a hard enough on it’s own, due to being assigned a class full of delinquents at Musashino High School. Once making it through this, he is confronted by yet another obstruction. He misses the test that qualifies him to teach in public schools. He then stumbles upon and advertisement for a prestigious private school, Holy Forest Academy. After nearly blowing his chances, Onizuka gets the job. Unfortunately, he’s yet again assigned a troublesome class. The infamous class 3-4. In all fairness, Eikichi has matured quite a bit since his Shonan days. He’s all about taking responsibility for ones own actions and accepting fate, dealing with it and moving on when things get serious.

Danma, Ryūji
Kanji: 弾間龍二

Age: 14[?] (BC), 15-17 (SJG), 22(GTO).
Birthday: 30 March, 1976
Height: 5’8
Weight: 59kg
Known Education: Tokumaru Private Junior Highschool,
Hacchū Junior Highschool,
Shōnan Kyokutō Senior Highschool,
Shōnan Tsujidō Senoir High School.
Occupation: Student/Service station employee/Various other partime jobs (SJG), Owns a motocycle store (GTO).
Gang member of: “Onibaku Combi”, “Midnight Angels”.
Description: The other main character of Shōnan Jun’ai Gumi, also formerly a Midnight Angel member and currently one half of the Onibaku duo. Ryūji starts the series as pretty much the same sort of guy as Eikichi - desperate to lose his virginity and trying to gain control of his delinquent lifestyle. However as the story progresses, Ryūji becomes a more mature character in some respects - he finds a girlfriend, first Ayumi Murakoshi, then Nagisa Nagase, and is more introspective than his partner. That said, he is always more than willing to kick some ass when the time is right. Ryūji is slightly taller than Eikichi (though the difference is not always visible) which is said to give him and extra edge in combat. Even with this advantage however, he and Eikichi are still more or less even in fighting ability. Ryūji has a considerably bad relationship with his parents, as they totally disapprove of his “bad behaviour”. A good example of this is in Bad Company, where Ryūji returns home at night, only to be locked out because he’d stayed out too late. Due to such treatment, Ryūji stays away from home, at first living with his older sister Yoko in Shōnan Jun’ai Gumi. <Add something about Ryuji’s father more than ready to hit him>
In GTO, Ryūji is hardly a main character, though at the same time, he does appear fairly often drinking with Eikichi or helping him out when in need. He now runs his own used motorcycle store for a living which appears to do quite well, and has maintained a flourishing relationship with Nagisa. Despite how far in the background he is in GTO, in Bad Company he actually plays a more leading role than Eikichi!

Tsukai, Tsuyoshi
Kanji: 塚井強

Age: 16 (SJG),
Birthday: 1975
Known Education: Enoshima Yonchū Junior Highschool,
Shōnan Tsujidō Senoir High School
Occupation: Student (SJG).
Description: Tsuyoshi Tsukai was one of the first fellow students of the Onibaku to be introduced in Shōnan Junai Gumi. Before enrolling at Tsujidō Highschool, he was student at Enoshima Yonchū Junior High, where he was renowned for being one of the Shitennou, or “Four Heavenly Kings”. Naturally he is a good fighter, not far from the Onibaku’s league, as is shown when he beats both Hino and Katsuyuki at the same time and then the following day beating fellow former Shitennō member Maruguchi and his partner. Despite this, Tsukai is depicted as a very noble character, with a certain heir of maturity about him. He holds the Onibaku in high regard, greatly respecting both members. Throughout the series Tsukai appears fairly regularly, though like many other characters, he has less time in the spotlight in the later parts of the series. That said, he still continues to pop up every now and then, though never really taking part in any fights. In Shonan Junai Gumi he has a crush on, and soon starts a relationship with Yui Itō, whom he was been friends with since Junior High. According to Saejima in GTO, Tsukai actually marries Itō, and currently works in the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force.

Hashiri, Makoto
Kanji: 走真

Age: 16 (SJG), 22(GTO).
Birthday: 1975
Known Education: Shōnan Tsujidō Senoir High School
Occupation: Student (SJG).
Description: Makoto is a former victim of bullying, who has reinvented himself as a friend of the toughest guys in the area. He is popular with women, and has a string of girls involved with him throughout the series, but he settles for Mami eventually.
Makoto is hardly ever useful in a fight, but he can be relied upon for backup in a clinch.
He is often seen with different haircuts, but is distinctive because of the way his mouth is drawn. His father and mother are seen in the series- he looks exactly like his father but without facial hair.

Abe, Hiroshi
Kanji: 阿部ひろし

Age: 16 (SJG), 22(GTO).
Birthday: 1975
Known Education: Shōnan Tsujidō Senior High School
Occupation: Student/Paper Boy (SJG), Cabaret Club Owner (GTO)
Gang member of: “Onibaku Gumi”.
Description: Hiroshi Abe makes his debut early on in Shōnan Junai Gumi, appearing as a smug, serial womanising asshole that the Onibaku would dearly like to crush. The Onibaku however, begin to warm to him when they realise Abe could teach them how to become playboys like himself. At first he lets them in on false tactics and theories to attract women, however his actual secret in soon revealed involving spending millions of yen on physical appearance. Abe earns this money by getting up at early hours of the morning and working as a paperboy, as he comes from a very poor family from Mikasa City, Hokkaido. Not long after, he becomes a loyal friend of the Onibaku duo, and aids in numerous fights such as the Saejima/Kamata affair, and also playing an important role in the Fumiya Shindōji incident. Nearing the middle of the series Abe is held down a year and transferred to class F alongside the Onibaku. Due to this it seems Abe would adopt more of a leading role from that point forward, however this is not the case as the complete opposite begins to happen. From there onwards, Abe’s screen time gradually decreases, so much so that he eventually disappears altogether. It is assumed he’s still around, but just not shown. Surprisingly, Abe is mentioned in GTO however, though never physically appearing. According to Saejima he owns a successful cabaret venue… and has become impotent.

Kamata, Jun
Kanji: 鎌田純

Age: 16 (SJG)
Birthday: 1975
Occupation: Student/Bartender (SJG)
Description: Kamata first appeared as a bad guy with his buddy Saejima, but once the Onibaku beat them they changed their ways. Kamata is shown to be incredibly strong, beating whole gangs of people when he's in a bad mood. He also has a younger sibling, Kaoru, who causes all sorts of misunderstandings. Kamata has a painful history - he spent his childhood with his best friend Natsu and his older sister, but her rape at the hands of a vicious gang caused her to commit suicide. Natsu then killed the perpetrators, but Jun had arrived with some adults who took him away, shouting 'Traitor!' at his former friend. Jun is mixed blood, and leaves Shonan for the United States, honouring a promise he made, but makes an appearance in the final volume working in a bar. Kamata is not even mentioned in GTO, though he has a striking resemblance to Mayu Wakui.

Saejima, Toshiyuki
Kanji: 冴島俊行

Age: 16 (SJG), 22(GTO).
Birthday: 1975
Occupation: Student (SJG), Police Officer (GTO).
Description: The first of the two leaders of the Kamakura no Kyouken (Kamakura Mad Dogs). Saejima, along with his partner Kamata, are renowned for thier brutality. The duo take down the Onibakugumi, but are defeated by the Onibaku with relative ease. They join the gang, and from that point on Saejima is a ‘good guy’ albeit often with questionable motives. Despite being comic relief to some extent, Saejima is still a demon in a fight. His family, seen in Wideban volume 11, are nice, normal people- who are scared to death of the delinquent. His sister talks to him through a bolted door and his mother calls the police at his slightest movement. Maybe he was a really bad guy after all then? In GTO, Saejima does the utmost unexpected. He becomes a policeman (not to mention, a very corrupt one). He has around the same screen time as Ryuji, if not more, since he has several chapters based on him. In these mini-arcs, you can see “Saejima the Cop” at his worst; doing everything an officer of the law shouldn’t, from planning an underground pornographic film to smuggling Chinese immigrants into the country. Aside from all this, Saejima is still a good friend of Eikichi’s, and is always willing to lend him a helping hand.
